Entrance to a little favela, Ratones

Entrance to a little favela, Ratones, oil on card, 15 x 18 cm

Dogs, adolescents and rubbish: both the adolescents and the dogs roam about this little area, the adolescents smoking cigarettes and looking at each other or at the dogs and then occasionally conversing. The dogs do a lot of sniffing.  Both the adolescents and the dogs are are quite friendly.

The male adolescents have some bizarre vanities: they smell very strongly of a particularly nasty aftershave (or is it insect repellant?) and one has managed to bleach his hair so it appears that someone has glued a sponge to the top of his head. Both the adolescents and the dogs roam around this little area.

I am not sure if, technically, this is a favela. But then, the definitions vary widely to encompass both from social to architectural criteria.

Roses, June 19, 2014

Roses, June 19, 2014, oil on card, 18 x 15 cm

The Game with such pictures, Chineesishly, is to not meddle too much and, in the tradition of the fine watercolours from that country, enjoy chance events on the support.

And, in my case to marry this to the density of European painting. The expressionists were here before, but for me tension remains: between spontanaity and depth, between play and form.

As ever, in flower paintings, I bow before the majesty of Fantin Latour.

Lagoa

Lagoa, houses on a ridge, oil on card, 15.5 x 17.5 cm

A pochade painted above the lake. I find using the easel helps me get a much better sense of the entire picture than having the carrier and support on my lap.

I am thinking of going to Russia to do some work in 2015. I hope the Crimean situation has blown over by them

Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2014

Here is my work, No. 672, in the Summer Exhibition. The photo came from my uncle, Swavek- thanks!

Everything is a little crammed in, I think you`ll agree, though that is rather to be expected given the nature of the show.

James McBey in Morocco; travel in late January 2015

This map is taken from the enjoyable book (below). I shall try to go to some of the same places next year. It`s delightful to be able to follow in the tracks of fellow Aberdonian painter. It seems he largely worked in cities near Tangier, none of which I have yet been to.

But there is a difficulty with painting in the north of Morocco in winter, which is that it rains a lot. Given that, It might be better to spend only a few days there, sightseeing mainly, then proceed further south-west to paint in Meknes, Casablanca, El Jadida, Safi and Marrakesh and the mountains again.

Below is my schematic map of my big journey to escape the summer heat of Brazil and enjoy life and make art. I shall try to take about six or seven weeks away, and visit my sister and her family in the Loire, as well as London and Paris.

BBC film about the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition

http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/proginfo/2014/23/summer-exhibition-bbc-arts

The Royal Academy wrote to me asking if the BBC could use footage of my picture which was accepted for the Summer Show. So if you have access to British TV, it might appear in this programme.
