Short diagonal strokes as a visual unit, which lend a certain dynamism.

It's very nice to be painting after a little interval- but these intervals are necessary for recharging.

My pointillism...

Here, my pointillism is more "correct": the dots are small, and their size range is lower. I don't use any lines.

I want to go up a brush size for the next.

This picture took ages to paint, though it was entirely an enjoyable, -indeed soothing- process. I can see why the restrictions of pointillism lead to a reimagining of colour and of brush mark. It's very radicalising in a patient way.

I'm going for a greater variety of marks and movements on this larger size. I want to be acting on the paper in a looser way.

I'm trying to give a structure to this with a underlying grid - in all this influenced by Klee and Scandinavian painters Tammisaari and Tal R.

Praia Brava, watercolour; a few things I learnt about watercolour

 *

Praia Brava, December 2022
 watercolour on paper, 29 x 40.5 cm

I've learnt a few things in the last three months since taking up watercolour again:

1. plan the watercolour in pencil

2. the technique does not allow many more than two layers of paint

3. it is best not to mix the colours too much

4. make use of the brushstroke, especially cross hatching,  lines and dots

5. you can't force the picture: I mean, watercolour has its own life, its own energy, and you can't make watercolour do what it can't do.  You need to accept "errors" and "go with the flow"

I think I am ready for my trip to Colombia and Ecuador.

A Pop-up Exhibition- Praia Brava, 3 December

*

The artist being assisted by the capable Miss J. Sekula.

Many thanks to Jolantha and Julia Sekula for organising this evening dedicated to my work at their lovely house in Praia Brava.

Despite wind, rain and a lengthy power failure, the evening was well attended, very enjoyable and resulted in several sales. Thanks to all who managed to make their way despite the challenges involved.

Over the last few weeks, I`ve been systematically evaluating my work over the last six years, and the display showed work covering this span of time, from a variety of places and in a range of treatments. In future shows,  I will have more framed work, and probably a narrower focus.

 Choosing pictures.

Paintings from Egypt, Bolivia and a still life among others

Clilean and Uruguayan and Roman paintings.

Landscapes from Pompeii, and Santa Catarina

Pictures from Palhoca, Sao Francisco and Florianopolis.

Paintings from Bolivia and Alfredo Wagner among others
