Mountains

I'm going to take a couple of weeks off painting and take photos of signs, buildings and other structures out on the periphery near Palhoça and Biguaçu.

Two from a drive out just beyond Santo Amaro. Both are slightly larger, using the bigger carriers I recently made and which are working out well.

I haven't been going much to the interior of late and I miss it, so perhaps I will go there this weekend. The island becomes claustrophobic.

Three from this small and pleasant town. 

I`ve been going there in the last week, but couldn`t make the pictures work. Sometimes it takes a few days to accumulate the necessary knowledge of a landscape to catch it.

Bolivia

BOLIVIA

Bolivia: the following seems likely: get from the Brazillian border city of Puerto Suarez to Santa Cruz by train, subsequently bus to La Paz, then further buses to Potosi and Sucre.

It strikes me that the parts of Bolivia that will be most interesting will be in the south west, because the Amazonian part will, most likely, be quite similar to Brazil. In any case, one cannot go everywhere.  I am dreading these long bus journeys.

Two from a drive out to just beyond Palhoça. A boy came to start a motorbike, a girl followed. I said hello, he looked at me scornfullly.

A beautiful day, cool and full of promises.

Another Saturday visit  to this beautifully located little town, which I love to paint.

I wish I could easily go and see some of Kokoschka's or Bomberg's paintings. Seeing things online is only really good as a reference and both were fellow itinerants, painting places from above.

 Carriers, with matches for scale: there is considerable perspective distortion here, but at least it gives an impression of scale.

You can see in Brasil, as if from a late novel by Hamsun, communities establishing themselves from almost nothing- a tiny cluster of houses: these often have a paradiscal quality.

And, as if to confirm Hamsun's pessimism about cities, you can also see how these little communities grow into huge areas of urban squalor. Santa Catarina is free of these huge cities, fortunately.
