It was a peculiar day: very windy, bright and cold. After I passed this garden I met an old man who was leaning on a gatepost. I asked him if he was all right. He said he was just pausing for breath.

Remnants

The rate of demolition in this area of Florianopolis is so rapid that soon all the original buildings will have gone and there will only be the sort of faceless condominiums you can see being constructed in the distance in both these images.

I ought, then, to hurry and record more of these old houses. They aren't of first grade architectural quality, but they do have personality.

Being a foreigner here makes me feel impotant to do anything to stop this process of destruction.

Where do we go from here?

I enjoy making the cutouts, and I believe they can be a striking expressive tool but the question is, what to do with them? They seem too insubstantial to function as art.

I shall play with 1. "Tableau"- essentially mini installations of cutouts and 2. Mobiles.

In addition, I am trying to deal with the difficulties of producing more work which will, most likely, simply go into storage, and is unlikely to sell. I haven't space to store more work.

The solution is to work digitally. To treat the artwork as simply the means towards producing photographic digital images, then discard it once its finished with.And by putting the work on the Internet, it is accessible to the public.

I gain a great deal from the support of people, usually strangers, on Flickr, Facebook and Deviantart. They only know my work through its dematerialised pixellated presence on a screen. Does that matter?

A series from the bus station. Would these images be stronger in black and white? Sometimes black and white can become rather relentless, and it often seems a lazy way to designate a photo as "art", without adding any other specific qualities to it.
