Postcards from the Edge (1990): review - 2/10

A cocaine-snorting actress is given a role on a film on condition that she lives with her alchoholic and domineering mother, who is also given to melodrama and self-pity.

There are far too few good jokes and cameo performances in this film to relieve the irritatingness of the main charaters- who are extremely shallow- and it drags on and on, rudderless, displaying that self-indulgence that often afflicts films about actors or film-making.

The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990): review- 0/10

A dismal and self-important film, featuring wooden performances from the entire cast and ugly camerawork.

Hanks is always a unpleasant sight, with his weak mouth and piggy eyes: here he is thoroughly detestable. Cattrall's acting is astonishingly poor.

White Hunter Black Heart (1990): review- 8/10

In the late forties, an American film director goes to Africa to make a film, but is distracted by the chance of shooting an elephant.

A study of arrogance in various guises- rudeness, racism, insensitivity to others, callousness, vainglory, machismo and disrespect for nature.

These qualities are personified by the white hunter and in others in the colonial society of the hunting station.
